  • JJ Watt's Hurricane Harvey fundraising efforts surpass $10 million

Watt, who has spent all six of his seasons in the NFL with the Houston franchise, started raising funds on Monday (NZ time) with the goal of US$200,000 and has been overwhelmed with support since.

The Bowers Civic Center, where at least 100 people were seeking shelter after their homes flooded, was inundated with water early Wednesday morning.

"We have good news", said Jeff Lindner, a meteorologist with the Harris County Flood Control District.

Forecasters say Louisiana is "under the gun" of Storm Harvey after it made landfall for a second time. "Please keep sharing. Please keep donating". Every little thing helps.

Homes around the levee were subject to a mandatory evacuation order, but some residents chose to stay.

Massive thank you to @TheEllenShow for the $1 Million donation. The campaign has raised over $6 million in three days.

Sun is predicted for Houston in the days ahead, potentially allowing respite and a chance to tackle the damage.

Watt said he will leave the link open to "see how high we can get it".

"We are a very resilient people down here".

Tickets for the contest were $25 and went on sale Tuesday night at Ticketmaster.com.

He said he wanted to start a fundraiser to help people get back on their feet.

"Given the charitable nature of this event we will not be allowing ticket sales", reads a message on StubHub's site. As many as 40 people from the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have already been in Houston assisting with rescues.

During the Presidents previous visit, he joined Governor Abbott in receiving a detailed briefing on the federal, state, and local response to Hurricane Harvey.

Amy Adams Strunk, Tennessee Titans owner and a Houston native, has reportedly donated $1m to Watt's campaign, while Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul has also pledged $50,000. Turner also set a curfew in Houston from midnight Wednesday to 5 a.m. until further notice.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson thanked Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, who was visiting Washington, for the offer of assistance. Even after the recent increase, prices at the pump are up just 2.9% this year compared to an average increase of 20.2%. As are MLB and its players association.
