"Senseless fun & entertainment " — Fan reaction

The film took in an estimated $20.5 million in Thursday preview showings, a record for an August opening according to studio estimates Friday.

In case you've evaded both hyperbole and hatred, the plot is fairly simple.

Suicide Squad cost $US175 million to make, according to researcher Box Office Mojo, and tens of millions more to market. And from the looks of it, Ayer doesn't also feel that the additional footage will add too much to the movie either. Somewhat reluctantly, Flag and his team descend into their probably-suicidal mission, and super-hero filmy stuff ensues.

The fascinating anti-hype that has preceded the film's general release is, in my opinion at least, a bit baffling. Fans have been divided, but critics have been savage.

The film isn't without its merits.

That's in spite of a blistering response from critics, indicated by a 27% positive score on movie review website Rotten Tomatoes. To some, she's still the breakout. "You want to talk about a really, difficult, complex performance?"

In perhaps the movie's best scene, the gang seems to bond while hanging out an abandoned bar.

Unfortunately, the team has attracted the attention of another supervillain: the Joker (Jared Leto), who's determined to rescue Harley Quinn and resume their twisted romance. But the camaraderie needed to be established earlier to make the movie work.

In the firing line this week is Suicide Squad, DC Comics' follow-up to the exceedingly reviled (but hugely profitable) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while this isn't quite the doom-laden misery fest of that drawn-out bore, it does share many of its flaws, primarily a disregard for any kind of comprehensible narrative beyond basic fan service, and a murky, unattractive visual style that seems to be there purely to distinguish itself from the lighter, more colourful Marvel offerings. I think it's fascinating that the film asserts this idea - rebuked by parents through the ages - so forcefully. "There are scenes that may never see the light of day between Harley and the Joker where we explored those other dysfunctional sides", Leto said. In some versions of the comics, he regularly physically and emotionally abuses her. In contrast, "Suicide Squad" is an interminable muddle.

Warner Bros. said the film also was No. 1 internationally, generating $US132 million in sales at 17,670 screens. Now, Batman and Superman battle one another.

There is a hint that the footage is not just The Joker, but also Harley Quinn.

You might not care for this sort of thing anyway; the violence and bad language flow pretty freely throughout.

Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, "Suicide Squad" has been tracking for a $140 million weekend, but it remains to be seen whether poor reviews take a toll.
