Patrice Evra sent off before their game with Guimaraes for kicking a Marseille fan

Marseille defender Patrice Evra received a red card during Thursday's Europa League match with Guimaraes before the opening whistle even sounded.

Marseille added there had been "unacceptable behaviour" from some fans who subjected Evra and his team-mates to "hateful attacks" but said: "As a professional and experienced player, Patrice Evra could not respond in such an inappropriate way".

Footage then shows Evra displaying impressive agility for a man of his age in "aiming an acrobatic kick" at a supporter, who appears to fall to the ground after being struck in the face.

Vitória SC went on to win the game 1-0 which was a disappointing result for Marseille.

Evra is likely to face a lengthy ban for the incident.

In January 1995, Eric Cantona, playing for Manchester United, launched a flying kick at a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst Park who had jeered him after he had been sent off.

"Patrice is a more than experienced player and we can not respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters".

There was a similar line from Marseille in an official press communique issued last night.

"An internal investigation was carried out to establish all responsible".

The player had gone over to the fans to talk to them - but the situation escalated.

However, he also condemned the supporter who was attacked, saying: "He is not a supporter of OM, because you can not insult your own players, you have to be behind everyone".
